THE EXPLORATION

03THE YEAR WITHOUT A SUMMER

One eruption. A world away. A summer people would remember.

Mount Tambora erupted in what is now Indonesia in 1815. In 1816, unusually cold conditions struck parts of the world during the growing season, bringing frost, crop failures and food scarcity. Tambora’s eruption sent material into the atmosphere and contributed to the cooling associated with the Year Without a Summer.

IMPORTANT DISTINCTION

The eruption and the frozen-summer scenes in the episode artwork are separated by both distance and time. Tambora erupted in 1815, thousands of miles from many communities affected in 1816. The documentary will follow that connection rather than present the volcano as a local eruption beside a snowy village.
